Cut Red Apple - Preview

Hello lovely watercolour adventurers, this week's project is a sweet little study of an apple cut with a lovely long shadow.

Working with our very basic colours, we are going to mix up all the colours we need for this simple study. I always encourage people to try out various elements of a study before they start, and perhaps if you are a little nervous you could practise the shadow before you paint the apple halves.

This week covers wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and laying on washes. Take your time mixing the colours and try them out on swatches before you start. If you're used to hot-pressed paper, you will find that the NOT or cold-pressed paper will give you a little longer to drop in the colour, but if you drop in the colour and it doesn't soften with lovely cloudy edges, then your paper is too dry, in which case stop, allow it to dry completely and then re-wet the area. These are some of the basic things that I have been teaching for many years and are the bedrock of future painting success. Take your time and have fun.

Peace, love and sunshine.
Billy x
